The Brotherhood employs around 600 staff and over 1200 volunteers in more than 50 locations across Melbourne.

Salaries

The Brotherhood strives to create a workplace that offers attractive and competitive salaries and employment conditions.

We have two Certified Agreements which cover all staff with the exception of the Executive. These are the result of negotiations with a number of unions and staff representatives and provide for regular salary movements and a wide variety of ‘best practice’ flexible working conditions.

In addition, working for a registered charity, Brotherhood staff have the opportunity to salary package a range of personal expenses pre-tax to reduce taxation and increase take-home pay.

Retail Store Assistant

LOCATION: Various
HOURS: 38 hours per week

Looking for an opportunity to work in a retail environment with a unique and varied offering of recycled and vintage goods? If you are a team player who has the ability to work with a varied team and loves a daily challenge then this is the perfect position.

We are looking for a flexible and enthusiastic person with high level customer service skills to be able to walk into our stores and hit the ground running. Your responsibilities will include the following:

  • Ensure high quality reputation through excellent customer service
  • Ensure client requests are met in a professional and timely manner
  • Assist with the display, sale and stock control of product

Your skills will include:

  • Ability to work well in a team environment
  • High quality people skills
  • Previous retail experience preferred
  • Experience in recycled goods preferred, but not essential

The position will be located primarily at our Brunswick Retail store but with occasions that may include deployment to other BSL Stores within Melbourne Metro. The salary for this position will be $34,906.80 plus weekend penalties. Generous salary packaging is available. Registered Nurse Division 1, Grade 2

LOCATION: Clifton Hill
HOURS: Part-time, 8.30 am to 3.30 pm (first four months, three shifts on Wed, Thurs and Fri; thereafter, two shifts on Thurs and Fri)

Sambell Lodge is seeking a Registered Nurse - Div 1, Grade 2, to work in its aged care facility in Clifton Hill. Sambell Lodge is an innovative and exciting facility which prides itself on being on the cutting edge of care for aged people.

The successful applicant will be a RN - Div 1 Nurse with current registration with the Nurses Board Victoria and have experience working with aged people.  Salary between $41 454 and $57 711 per annum, pro rata, based on Nurses Award, Division 1 Registered Nurse, Grade 2, based on qualifications and experience. Salary will be based on reflect qualifications and experience. Salary packaging is available.

Research Officer – Youth Connections 

LOCATION: Fitzroy 
HOURS: Part-time 0.6 eft

The Brotherhood of St Laurence has an exciting opening for an enthusiastic and skilled person to undertake research and evaluation of our Peninsula Youth Connections service.

You will be responsible for coordinating data collection processes for the Peninsula Youth Connections, undertaking analysis of the service data and disseminating findings to key stakeholders involved in the program. You will also undertake thematic projects to evaluate the effectiveness of the work with at-risk young people, identify emerging gaps and challenges requiring changes to service delivery.

The findings of these will be important to improve the program and service delivery in the Frankston Mornington Peninsula region and will also make an important contribution to policy discussion about Youth Connections and youth education and employment policies more broadly.

The position is located in the Brotherhood’s Research and Policy Centre in Fitzroy with some travel to Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula required.

This is a part-time, 0.6 eft position, maximum term position until December 2011.

Senior Project Manager, Centre for Practice Knowledge and Research

HOURS: Full-time
LOCATION: Fitzroy

 The Brotherhood of St Laurence is seeking an experienced, expert practitioner and professional development manager to lead the design and practical implementation of a reflective research and practice culture across the organisation.

This is a new role to establish a Centre for Practice Knowledge and Research within the Brotherhood that will develop an expert practitioner strategy, ensure high quality services, promote service innovation and applied research outcomes and contribute to advocacy agendas for influencing government and community investment in social inclusion policy and practice.
 
The successful applicant will have outstanding leadership skills and a strong track record working with managers and team leaders to develop and embed practice knowledge and action research across all levels of client services, and to support the ‘impact of our work’ framework.

Project Officer; Indigenous Engagement Program  

HOURS:  Full-time
LOCATION: Fitzroy
 
The Brotherhood of St Laurence’s Community Employment Development Department is dedicated to demonstrating effective strategies to improve workforce participation in highly disadvantaged neighbourhoods and population groups.

The program involves the collaborative efforts of BSL’s Centre for Work and Learning at Yarra  and the Melbourne Aboriginal Youth Sport and Recreation Cooperative (Maysar) to source and transition Indigenous job seekers into educational and employment pathways. 

This position will incorporate the BSL’s partnership with the Maysar Gymnasium to work in outreach to link Indigenous job seekers at Maysar into employment opportunities sourced by the Brotherhood’s Centre for Work and Learning (CWL) at Yarra. The position involves the coordination of a range of foundation skills training courses and “taster” workshops at Maysar to identify aspirations in Indigenous job seekers and provide exposure to work environments in order to develop employment pathways which can then be facilitated at the CWL. The role involves both stakeholder management and project planning activities as well as ensuring the development of individualised service responses to a case load of Indigenous job seekers with a range of barriers to employment.

The successful applicant will have:

  • a sound understanding of the communities and communities of interest and in particular Aboriginal communities in both the City of Yarra and in inner city Melbourne
  • appreciation of the needs of Aboriginal people
  • sound knowledge of Aboriginal agencies, networks and funding sources
  • ability to plan, prioritise and organise work within a set timetable in an busy work environment
  • well developed project management skills
  • well developed counselling skills and understanding of case management change principles
  • ability to solve problems through discussion, negotiation and team work
  • sympathy with the values, mission and vision of the Brotherhood
  • ability to resolve conflict within a team context
  • skills in negotiation, consultation and networking.

Public Relations Manager

The Brotherhood of St Laurence is one of Australia’s most innovative and progressive not-for-profit organisations.  Based in Fitzroy, we research and develop programs to support a wide range of disadvantaged people as part of our work towards an Australia free of poverty.

We currently have an opportunity for a dynamic and enthusiastic Public Relations professional to join our Communications and Development team.   This is a great opportunity to make a valuable contribution to our important work. The Public Relations Manager is responsible for strategically generating media coverage related to our Appeals, Events, Advocacy and ongoing projects. Working closely with the Senior Manager Communications and other staff, the Public Relations Manager liaises with key media, develops and implements media plans, writes releases, manages contact information and monitors and reports on the success of media initiatives. It is a busy role which generally involves working on a number of projects from across the organisation simultaneously, and is part of a close-knit team.

The successful applicant will have significant public relations experience demonstrating a strategic understanding of the media, preferably with Agency or Publicist experience.  You will be happy to hit the ground running and excited about the opportunities presented by our 80th anniversary year.

You will have proven experience in placing stories in all types of media, excellent writing and liaison skills and a strong existing network of media contacts. An interest in social policy and the welfare of disadvantaged people is also a must.

Project Support Officer 

HOURS:    10 hours per week (hours and days negotiable)

Neighbourhood Renewal is a state government initiative that assists in creating stronger and more vibrant communities.  Neighbourhood Renewal aims to bring together local residents and communities, government, businesses and service providers to work together to address disadvantage and to pursue opportunities to build on skill, capacity and leadership within the commu

The Project Support Officer will be part of the Doveton/Eumemmerring Neighbourhood Renewal Project Team and will work alongside team members based at the Doveton Neighbourhood Learning Centre. 

The Project worker will be responsible for:

  • undertaking project work 
  • providing administrative support to the team
  • responding to community queries and promote the service locally
  • arranging office and community meetings and local events
  • representing and providing information about the program team at community events

The successful applicant will have outstanding communication skills, experience  working with community groups and members, ability to work autonomously, strong organisational and planning skills and patience and the ability to deal with a range of individual personalities.

The position is part time fixed term based in Doveton until May 2011.  Salary will be based on SACS Award Community Development Worker, Class 1 and will be between $38,519 and $43,030 pro rata based on experience.

 Employer Engagement Coordinator   

HOURS:   1 EFT  (12 month contract)

The Brotherhood of St Laurence’s Group Training Organisation (GTO) wishes to engage with new employers to provide aggregated recruitment solutions with large and medium employers and create pathways for disadvantaged jobseekers via a range of new recruitment models as part of its Employment and Training Strategy.

The program involves the collaborative efforts of BSL’s GTO and Centre for Work and Learning Yarra to source and transition jobseekers in to employment pathways provided by relationships with existing and new employers. 

This role will suit applicants who have a passion for managing employer relationships and developing employment models for disadvantaged jobseekers.

The Employer Engagement Coordinator will secure employment opportunities for job ready CWL jobseekers, develop strategies for engaging employers with a range of recruitment models and develop strategies for effectively matching, coordinating and transitioning CWL jobseeker clients to appropriate opportunities with employers.

The salary for this position will be $50,000-$58,000pa and attractive salary packaging options are available.  The successful applicant will be required to undergo a standard Police Check.
