Poverty - it's about more than just a lack of income

We interviewed four members of the BSL community on their lived experience to demonstrate how poverty is about more than just a lack of income.

When we can better measure and understand the different dimensions of poverty such as people's living conditions, education and health - we can develop more effective solutions. This can provide governments and other organisations with a better understanding of the local conditions that need to be addressed, and also identify where resources should be directed.

Sambell Lived Experience Video Series Kirsty
Kirsty is a single mother from regional Victoria. She is a graduate of our SEED program (Sustaining Economic Empowerment and Dignity for Women). She talks about why safety, education and employment opportunities are vital for brighter futures and how excited she is to change her life’s direction with further learning and community support.
Sambell Lived Experience Video Series Hayley
Hayley, 21, is a young person who grew up in out of home care where she overcame adversity and stigma to graduate secondary school. She talks about why education and stable housing are critical when it comes to a young person’s life trajectory. Hayley is committed to using her experiences to help other young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to thrive.
Sambell Lived Experience Video Series Mark
Mark is an older person living with disability, health issues and a resident of BSL’s Independent Living Units. Mark talks about the challenges of social isolation, inadequate housing after injuries stopped him from working, and the support he now receives at the Coolibah Centre to help him live a fulfilling life.
Sambell Lived Experience Video Series Sarah
Sarah is from Iraq and came to Australia as a refugee when she was 17. Challenges with language and social isolation were overcome when she found support at BSL, became a BSL Youth Advisor and was able to share her experiences with others. Sarah is now studying psychology and finding her path in life.
