Volunteering at BSL benefits both volunteers and the community
River’s journey began with BSL just over two years ago when they finished school and were looking to gain work experience in retail. Having always loved op-shopping, when River saw the opportunity to volunteer at our BSL op-shops, they couldn’t pass on it.
‘I love the atmosphere of an op-shop,’ says River. ‘I’ve always gone to them before I started volunteering, and now it’s like, I’m in the thick of it and I am able to help other people with their op-shop journey!’
For River, volunteering at a BSL Op-Shop is an important part of their day-to-day life. Prior to becoming a volunteer, they didn’t have any work experience, but now they enjoy spending their day in a place they love, surrounded by a supportive network of coworkers and friends.
'The thing I enjoy most about the shop are my co-workers. I love seeing them each week and catching up with them all. We are all very different and unique people; however, we get along so well, it creates a good working environment and helps run the shop a lot better.'
This support and connection are really important for River. River is autistic and a part of the LGBTQIA+ community. Knowing they can go to work and be supported by those around them is very reassuring. ‘I know I can be my full authentic self, without discrimination.’
River has become an integral member of the team at our BSL Kilsyth store, and we are so lucky to have them on board.
