As the Paralympics wind up, Cheryl tells us about her big day on the waves

With the Paralympics winding up in Rio, and surfing just given the nod as an Olympic sport, we thought it was a good time to tell you about Cheryl’s big surfing adventure.

Cheryl receives home care services from the Brotherhood, and she took to the waves for the first time earlier this year at Point Leo, on the Mornington Peninsula outside Melbourne.

Our Frankston home care team organised the day, which was run by the incredible people at the Disabled Surfers Association of Australia.

Cheryl says it was one of the best experiences of her life. ‘It was fantastic. The freedom. They took me right out on the water. I’d never been that far out before,’ she says.‘I was kicking my legs and I was waving my arms. It was beautiful. It was the best feeling.’‘Getting out of my chair was fantastic and the people that helped me they were lovely – really, really nice. I just want to thank the people who helped me that day. It was the best experience.’

Our Frankston home care team helps Cheryl with personal care, transport and various other forms of assistance. She’s a regular at Brotherhood social events and the annual Christmas luncheon.
