The David Scott School and two of its students have been recognised for excellence and having an outstanding learning environment for young people.

The school last week won the regional annual Best Practice School Award from the Frankston Mornington Peninsula Local Learning and Employment Network (FMPLLEN).

The award marks a significant achievement by a local Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) provider. The David Scott School was acknowledged for all-round excellence in student learning, school culture, work pathways, curriculum, outcomes and completion rates.

Two of its students, Lachlan and Maya, have also been recognised for excellence and endeavour.

The David Scott School (DSS) is a registered, independent school for disadvantaged young people, and opened its doors in early 2017 to deliver VCAL to Years 10, 11 and 12.

Acting school principal Stacey Bushell said, “These awards are a wonderful acknowledgement of the hard work of teachers and the school community. The two students from DSS, who won awards in both excellence and endeavour, have shown tremendous growth, and it was a great opportunity to celebrate their achievements.”

Lachlan won the Student Excellence award.

“Lachlan rises every morning at 5 am to make the two-hour journey to school,” said Stacey.

“He makes it on time every single day, and his enthusiasm and determination never fades as he always offers a friendly hello while happily engaging in conversations.”

Maya won the Student Encouragement award.

“Maya’s perseverance and resilience has seen her return to school to complete her senior VCAL certificate. She never loses sight of her goal and has worked diligently to complete her studies while completing vocational training in traffic management, business, sport and recreation,” said Stacey.

Maya has also mentored peers and campaigned for a charity supporting young people.

This year, the David Scott School has begun an expansion with 55 students enrolled and numbers have grown to 90 during the year. The school is expanding to allow 120 students to enrol into 2020.

The David Scott School educates young people who have become disengaged from the mainstream school system. It has individualised high-quality support using the advantaged thinking model and focussing on wellbeing, pathways and career transition support.
