Low-income families would benefit from proposals in review of Victorian energy markets
Low-income and vulnerable households are struggling with high power bills, and recommendations in the independent review for the Victorian Government of electricity and gas retail markets would benefit them, said the Brotherhood of St Laurence.
“The review released today makes a series of important recommendations which, if implemented, would lead to much lower bills for households on low incomes,” said Damian Sullivan, head of the Brotherhood’s research on energy, equity and climate change.
“This is good news for households on low incomes,” he said.
Background to the Brotherhood’s concerns on the retail energy market
For some years the Brotherhood of St Laurence has been concerned that the retail energy market is failing consumers. In June 2015 the Brotherhood commissioned economic consultancy CME to undertake a critique of the Victorian retail electricity market. The report highlighted that households on low incomes were hit particularly hard by rising energy retail costs. We recommended an independent review into the retail energy market.
