Welcoming Treaty
The Brotherhood of St. Laurence (BSL) and Will Broughton, Director First Nations Strategy and Outcomes, welcome Victoria’s statewide Treaty, a profound step forward and one of Australia’s most significant moments in our journey toward truth, justice and self-determination.
Signed on the banks of Birrarung, Treaty enshrines the right of First Peoples to be consulted on laws and decisions that affect them. It establishes Gellung Warl, an Aboriginal-led body that will continue the work of the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria and Yoorrook Justice Commission, while also embedding First Peoples history and perspectives in Victoria’s school curriculum.
A proud Gunggari man, Mr Broughton said: “This landmark legislation underscores the importance of First Peoples leadership, truth telling and self-determination”.
“BSL remains steadfast in its commitment to working alongside First Peoples to support culturally safe services, community-led change and deliver stronger outcomes for all,” he said.
Mr Broughton said the organisation had an opportunity to deepen partnerships and amplify First Peoples’ voices to help shape a more just and inclusive Australia.
“First Peoples in Victoria will now have a stronger consultative and decision-making influence, something that aligns deeply with BSL’s purpose and priorities on self-determination, cultural safety and First Nations partnerships,” he said.
Beyond a new policy environment, Treaty heralds a transformative era and one of the most significant moments in Victoria’s history.
“What we're doing now is building strong foundations for generations. It’s an opportunity to strengthen relationships and move beyond the systemic and subtle racisms of the past toward genuine respect and partnerships.”
BSL Executive Director Travers McLeod was proud to see Victoria take this historic step forward.
“This moment reflects the strength, resilience, and leadership of Aboriginal communities and marks an important milestone on the journey toward truth, justice, and self-determination. At BSL, we stand alongside First Nations peoples in supporting a future grounded in respect, partnership, and shared purpose.”
