BSL Backs Nation-Leading Treaty in Victoria

The Brotherhood of St. Laurence (BSL) has joined civil society organisations across Victoria in supporting the nation-leading Treaty – the first legislation of its kind introduced in any Australian state or territory parliament.

This is a historic moment that represents a significant milestone in the decade-long journey toward Treaty in Victoria. When passed into law, the legislation will make permanent the First People’s Assembly, established under a new authority to oversee Treaty-making in Victoria.

This new governance model will ensure that decisions made on behalf of, and for, First Peoples is rooted in respect, trust and self-determination.

BSL Director of First Nations Strategy and Outcomes Will Broughton said that support for Treaty is consistent with the BSL 2021 – 2024 Reconciliation Action Plan’s  commitments and reflects the vision for an Australia free of poverty.

“At BSL, we believe that when First Nations communities have genuine self-determination and control over decisions that affect us, everyone benefits.”

“We back a future grounded in truth telling, self-determination and strong cultural governance led by First Peoples. Victoria’s Treaty is an important milestone in this future, setting a new kind of relationship.”

“We encourage all Members of Parliament to support measures that embed shared decision making and accountability,” Broughton said.

BSL recognises Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Peoples and the Traditional Custodians of this land and waterways, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures as one of the richest and oldest continuing cultures in the world.

BSL also recognises the overwhelming evidence of the impact of colonisation, dispossession, removal of children from their families and other adverse laws, policies and practices on the social, cultural and economic wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities.
