National Reconciliation Week 2024

On Monday 27 May, the Brotherhood of St. Laurence (BSL) Executive Director, Travers McLeod, and BSL Board Chair, Stephen Newton, issued a statement reflecting the organisation’s commitment to reconciliation.

As we celebrate National Reconciliation Week 2024, we affirm our commitment to walking the path of reconciliation with courage, humility, and respect.

The theme of Reconciliation Week 2024 is Now More than Ever and, as the Brotherhood of St. Laurence (BSL), we stand firm in our commitment to advancing the cause of First Nations self-determination, justice, and truth telling. We recognise that the journey towards reconciliation and empowerment is ongoing and requires unwavering dedication.

We believe that true reconciliation can only be achieved through meaningful dialogue, acknowledgment of historical injustices, and genuine efforts to address the entrenched disparities faced by First Nations communities. This includes amplifying First Nations voices, supporting community-led initiatives, and advocating for policies that prioritise self-determination and reconciliation.

We remain steadfast in our solidarity with First Nations peoples. We will continue to work with First Nations communities, organisations, and allies to confront the legacies of the past and pave the way for a more equitable and inclusive future.

The journey towards justice and healing is complex, but with determination and collaboration, we can create a society where the rights and dignity of all Australians, especially First Nations peoples, are upheld and celebrated.
