Sorry Day: 'I lived only five years with my mum'

Former state ward Kutcha Edwards is a member of the Stolen Generations. Edwards gave a powerful presentation at the Brotherhood's Sorry Day event in Melbourne on May 26, 2015.

He was taken from his parents by 'the welfare' as a baby along with two of his sisters and three brothers. Edwards returned to his family at 13. His first memory of his mother was as a six-year-old when she was permitted a short visit to the institution that was 'home'. She waged a long battle with authorities to have her children returned.
'What has been done to me and my family, I want to make sure that it doesn't happen to my great, great, great, great, great, great grandchildren,' said Edwards. The award-winning singer-songwriter delivered his moving presentation yesterday to Brotherhood of St Laurence staff and volunteers at a National Sorry Day event in Fitzroy. Sorry Day is an Australia-wide observance which acknowledges the nation's Stolen Generations. The Brotherhood thanks Kutcha Edwards for sharing his story of resilience and passing on his message of hope. We are equally thankful to Wurundjeri Elder Colin Hunter who welcomed guests with a traditional smoking ceremony.
