In this first issue of the Social Barometer series, the Brotherhood of St. Laurence seeks to add to the literature highlighting the disadvantages facing some of Australia’s children.

The Social Barometer: children’s chances presents indicators of children’s capabilities and childhood disadvantage.

Each of the six dimensions reflects basic capabilities that every child should be free to develop, including the capability to have good health, to read and write, to control one’s thoughts and emotions, to be free from violence and abuse, and to have access to an adequate level of economic resources.
